A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) combines the range of an internal combustion engine with the immediate acceleration and efficiency of a rechargeable electric motor/battery. PHEVs like the A3 Sportback e-tron® can run entirely on gas if the onboard battery is depleted. Battery electric vehicles (BEV), on the other hand, utilize an electric motor combined with a larger battery for immediate torque, long-range capability and potentially lower operating costs. Electric vehicles run entirely on electric power that’s stored in a battery, which is typically recharged at home overnight from a 220-volt outlet.
Most electric vehicle owners charge at home overnight from a 220-volt outlet, helping to reduce the need to charge elsewhere.
For charging on the go, there are currently 17,000 public charging stations and over 50,000 public charging outlets in the U.S. Electrify America plans on adding to the existing public chargers to establish a network that includes over 650 new locations for easy charging wherever you are and nearly 300 highway sites across the country for longer trips. Depending on the model, hardware and charging equipment, the time it takes to charge a hybrid or a fully electric vehicle will vary.
The current Audi A3 Sportback e-tron® battery can be charged in about 2.5 hours with the 240-volt charging unit that’s standard with the vehicle.
With the Audi e-tron quattro concept, the Combined Charging System (CCS) is engineered to enable charging with DC or AC electrical current. A full charge with DC electrical current at a charging station rated at 150 kW will take roughly 30 minutes.
The currently available 2018 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron® offers a total EPA estimated range of 400 miles as a combination gas-electric hybrid.
