Progress. Together.

Participate in our In-Use Verification Program to support the environment with responsible emissions monitoring.

Our Goal

As part of our continuing effort to produce the highest quality vehicles on the road, and in support of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, Volkswagen Group of America has committed to evaluating the efficiency of our vehicle emission systems through the In-Use Verification Program.

Qualified vehicles are selected for the program.

Get involved

As a member of the Volkswagen Group of America community, you can help our environmental compliance efforts by volunteering your vehicle for participation in our emissions testing program.

We identify and notify owners of eligible vehicles by mail. Owners who volunteer will then be selected at random for participation. All participation is completely voluntary.

Our In-Use Verification Program team will contact the randomly selected volunteers to discuss your vehicle's eligibility by going through a short questionnaire. If your vehicle is eligible, we will schedule time to set up a vehicle exchange!

Incentives

To show our appreciation, participating owners will be offered the following incentives:

Our process

This government mandated testing for all manufacturers involves the inspection and testing of your vehicle's powertrain and emission-related components.

Procurement of vehicles occurs in California, Colorado, and Michigan. Once vehicles are procured, they are safely and securely shipped in enclosed trucks to our designated testing locations in California and Colorado.

How we test image

How we test

Your vehicle will be handled with the utmost care and respect, and returned to you as quickly as possible. Participating vehicles are tested by our engineers to evaluate the effectiveness of your vehicle's emissions systems.

We simulate typical driving conditions in order to collect data about the emissions of your vehicle.

Exhaust Testing

Exhaust testing allows us to monitor emissions produced as a result of specific driving conditions. We place your vehicle on a dynamometer (vehicle treadmill), connect a special hose to the exhaust, and monitor the following scenarios.

City

The city driving cycle lasts about 30 minutes and mimics the stop-and-go style, with an average speed of 20 mph and a maximum speed of 60 mph.

Evaporative Testing

For evaporative testing, we simulate two scenarios: Sealed Housing Evaporative Determination (SHED) and On-board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR).

SHED image

SHED

The vehicle is placed in an enclosure called the Sealed Housing Evaporative Determination (SHED) chamber where the temperature is varied to measure the level of vapors that are coming from the vehicle and its components.

ORVR image

ORVR

In the refueling scenario, the vehicle is placed in an enclosure called the On-board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) chamber, to measure the vapors released during the refueling process.
