Start saying your goodbyes to gas stations. Approximately 80% of electric vehicle charging is done at home for a reason—waking up every morning with a freshly charged vehicle is one of the main value propositions of electric mobility. And, while you may be ready right now for the near-instantaneous electric torque from its dual motors, the 5.5-second 0-60 mph1, the 57 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, and the electric quattro® drive of your e-tron, there’s a chance your garage may not be ready to charge your vehicle.
This home-charging guide covers the basics of charging your e-tron at home, including the electrical preparations at your residence, and will point you to the right partners for assistance along the way.
Your e-tron comes standard with a home-charging system that can be kept in your vehicle as a portable charging solution or mounted to the wall of your garage with an optional wall-mounting clip. Interchangeable cables ensure that your e-tron can be charged from standard 120V household outlets or 240V outlets, and the 15-ft. length of the charging cable gives you the flexibility to reach your e-tron charging port from many different outlet locations.
Read on to learn about the requirements for your electrical outlet.
Level 1 charging means simply plugging your vehicle into a standard 120V household outlet, just like you would any other electrical device. Level 1 charging delivers a low amount of power, so it may take up to 90 hours to fully replenish your e-tron battery2. Although most normal driving distances will never fully deplete your e-tron battery, Level 1 charging may require your vehicle to charge for more than a day for even a partial charge.
As the name implies, Level 2 charging is a faster, more powerful charging experience that all starts from an upgraded 240V outlet. Level 2 charging provides considerably more power than Level 1 charging, and requires an upgraded circuit breaker with higher amperage.
When your garage is upgraded with 240V, 50-amp electrical service, you will be able to fully charge your e-tron in about 9 hours2, allowing you to enjoy the benefit of pulling out of your garage every morning with a freshly charged vehicle.
Level 2 charging is currently the most advanced way to charge your e-tron at home, and will require a qualified electrician to upgrade your garage. To make this as easy as possible, we’ve teamed up with an installation partner to make this as simple as shopping on Amazon.
In an industry-first, Audi is collaborating with Amazon Home Services to offer installation services from a trusted network of licensed electricians in your area with Amazon. Transparent pricing. Upfront customer reviews. Amazon’s Happiness Guarantee. And, online ordering with only a few clicks. Installing fast home-charging has never been easier.
To get started, visit amazon.com/audicharging, answer a few questions about your home, and schedule your installation. Once a 240V circuit is installed in your garage, simply plug in your e-tron home-charging system and rest easy knowing that your vehicle is reaping the benefits of Level 2 home charging.
In another industry-first, Audi is working with Arcadia Power to offer e-tron owners the ability to help support renewable energy. If this isn’t compelling enough, Arcadia Power also offers multiple ways for e-tron owners to potentially save money on their monthly electricity bill.
Today, homeowners who want to support renewable energy typically do so by installing solar panels on their roofs—a considerable investment that is only available to a limited number of Audi owners with an ideally located and situated single-family home.
With Arcadia Power, e-tron owners can help support renewable energy projects, whether they rent or own their residence, single-family home or condo. Learn more or enroll in two minutes at arcadiapower.com/audi.
What about when you need to charge away from home? Enter Electrify America, a company that is building a public electric vehicle direct current (DC) fast-charging network throughout the United States.
Electrify America has nearly 500 charging stations with 2000+ DC fast chargers and Audi e-tron owners will receive a complimentary 1,000 kWh of charging (approximately 2,000 miles of driving) at Electrify America sites.
By the time you pick up your e-tron, Electrify America will be operating a robust network of DC fast charging stations, building out charging stations in 17 metropolitan areas and along high-traffic corridors in 42 states, including two cross-country routes. Electrify America stations will be 70 miles apart, on average, across major U.S. highway corridors, helping to make long trips stress-free.
How fast is fast charging? Until Electrify America, fast charging typically could deliver 50 kW of power. This would charge your e-tron to 80% capacity in approximately 90 minutes2. Now with Electrify America’s DC fast chargers, that charging time can be reduced further.
Electrify America’s charging stations have power outputs from 50 kW to 150 kW at their metropolitan locations, and up to 350 kW at their highway corridor locations. And, because higher kW outputs correlate to faster charging sessions, at a charging power of 150 kW at an Electrify America charger, the e-tron would charge up to 80% SOC in approximately 30 minutes2.
Now that’s an electrifying partnership. Whether you’re at home or on the road, charging options have never been better.
1 Always obey all speed and traffic laws.
2 Charging times will vary and depend on a variety of factors, including ambient temperature, charger type, battery condition, vehicle condition and others.
