Reeves' success story is based on family.
Reeves Import Motorcars has been a unique dealership from the beginning. Founder Allen Reeves introduced the Bay area to some of the most exciting, new import models not found anywhere else. He also introduced his personal philosophy and golden rule of success: Treat people the way you would like to be treated.
Now, 30 years later, Reeves Import Motorcars has a single facility of nine award-winning dealerships and service departments on 23 acres. The Reeves success story is based on family. Allen married his childhood sweetheart, Vivian Clark. At first a homemaker, Vivian joined the dealership in 1978 during a time when there weren't many women in the automobile industry. Her first job was as Allen's mail clerk.
Today, Vivian recognizes the true wisdom of beginning at the base level. "By opening the mail in the beginning, I grew to know all of customers, our vendors, our billing and our business," she said.
"At first, I thought Allen was just trying to give me busy work, but I soon realized, he was giving me the knowledge I needed to eventually help him run one of the largest dealerships in the area."
With a philosophy of proving outstanding customer service through common courtesy and respect for the customer, the couple carefully planned the dealership's growth. Reeves began its dealership with Volkswagen (1971), and soon expanded to accommodate Porsche ('72), Audi ('72), BMW ('74), Subaru ('76), Hummer ('92) and Land Rover ('96).
A single location ensured that they would always be able to personally cater to both their business' and customers' needs.
"Allen and I built our business on treating people the way we like to be treated," said Vivian. "We made our decision early on not to spread ourselves so thin that we wouldn't be able to personally run our own business. We like to interact with customers, and believe this hands-on approach allows for more personalized service."
The Reeves commitment to customers, staff and the community are evident through the loyalty they've received from each of these groups. They have built an environment that promotes repeat sales, long-term employees and a respect for one's community. Customers are spoiled with sales and service departments that have won national and international awards.
Reeves' 205 employees attend free educational and customer service classes up to four times a week. And, whether its establishing an annual charity tennis tournament benefiting Tampa Bay area children or organizing other events, Reeves has been and continues to be a major contributor to the community. Allen died two years ago of cancer. Vivian now runs the dealership as she and her husband always had, with respect for the customer and a desire for success. Allen and Vivian's love for their business, community and each other helped create a legacy that will live well beyond any of their individual contributions.
