In 2004, you switched from an Audi A6 to the Audi A4 Avant you currently drive. What features of the A4 Avant did you find most enticing when you made your purchase?
The Avant body design was perfect for my design work. I also appreciate the reconfigurable rear cargo area and the optional sport package. Together with standard quattro®quattro®Audi quattro® permanent all-wheel drive, has had over a 30-year-long tradition.quattro® all-wheel drive, it is the ultimate Audi experience for me.
As a product designer and design instructor, you're familiar with what it takes to create something both intuitive and practical. What elements of your A4 Avant appeal most to your highly tuned sense of design?
I love the clean body design of my A4 Avant. The chassis platform provides for a very roomy and flexible interior. The integrally designed lower body cladding provides protection from road debris. The controlled forms and lines of the interior and instrument controls are visually well balanced and feel precise.
We constantly strive to develop the most innovative design of any luxury automaker. What Audi vehicles most capture your attention? Are there any in particular that you wish to drive?
All Audi vehicles capture my attention! So much so that I maintain collections of 1:43 and 1:18 scale model Audi vehicles both in my home office and university campus studio. I've had the opportunity to drive an R8 4.2 and would love to get behind the wheel of my newest favorite Audi, the all-new A7.
You visited Audi factories in both Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Can you share some of your most memorable experiences from your trip?
I enjoyed the Audi Ingolstadt tour, watching the Audi A3 being manufactured from raw materials to driving off the production line. I also enjoyed a meal at the Audi Café, the vertical car exhibit carousel in the Mobile Museum, and watching customers taking factory delivery of their new Audi vehicles. At Audi Neckarsulm, I watched the production of new A6 sedans and Avants and enjoyed a snack at the Audi collection store and café. I also visited the quattro® boutique, where customers could custom order accessories, exterior colors and interior trim for their new Audi quattro® vehicles. Overall, both experiences celebrated design in the highest order, and were thoughtful in every way.
You've driven your A4 Avant daily for nearly eight years. Do you see yourself in another Audi vehicle in the near future?
