The particular qualities of the four-link rear axle derive from its ability to withstand longitudinal and lateral forces separately. This enables high lateral rigidity to be provided, so that the vehicle’s handling benefits, but also permits a large amount of longitudinal compliance, which improves ride quality for the occupants. On each side, the suspension consists of the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly, two lower lateral control arms (the spring control arm and the track rod), a single upper lateral control arm and a trailing arm. The vehicle’s weight is borne by coil springs and shock absorbers mounted separately. The twin-tube, gas-filled shock absorbers are located close to the wheels, so that the maximum load-area width is obtained. A tubular anti-roll bar is secured to the axle beam by means of extremely stiff rubber-to-metal mounts; it reduces body roll effectively and has a positive influence on the amount of lateral force that can be absorbed and thus on the vehicle’s handling.
