Exhilarating power. Precise control.

True performance is never the result of a single component. It’s the combination of elements—engine design, drivetrain, suspension, gearing, vehicle rigidity and weight—that elevates a ride to greatness. At Audi, we understand this. That’s why so many of our performance innovations come via the race track. FSI® direct injection, the S tronic direct shift gearbox, the all-aluminum Audi Space Frame®, and, of course, legendary quattro® all-wheel drive—all play a role in delivering a ride that is exhilarating in its dynamism and control.

FSI®

In contrast to conventional intake manifold injection on conventional spark-ignition engines, FSI® Direct Injection engines inject fuel directly into the combustion chambers, dispensing with the throttle plate. That "unthrottles" the engine, reduces heat loss and thus increases output while reducing fuel consumption.

The system uses two charge-air supply modes: stratified charge at partial load and homogeneous operation at full load. In the stratified charge mode, an combustible fuel-air mixture is only produced in a defined zone around the spark plug. The engine management electronics monitor engine load and adjust injection timing, pressure, quantity parameters as well as the air flow inside the cylinder via the air intake channel. At full load, FSI® Direct Injection increases compression as well as engine efficiency and performance.

S tronic

The S tronic driving experience combines the driving excitement of a manual with the comfort of an automatic. Inside the cockpit, drivers experience superbly ergonomic and intuitive design, and engage Tiptronic® mode simply by using paddle shifters located on the steering wheel (optional). Whereas in conventional single clutch manuals, power flow is interrupted whenever the driver steps on the clutch pedal, with S tronic the clutch for the first gear opens exactly as the other clutch engages the next gear, producing shifts in less than .2 seconds. When compared to a manual, S tronic can deliver faster shifts, better acceleration figures and more economical fuel consumption.

Audi Space Frame

The third generation Audi Space Frame is an all-aluminum frame structure that we passionately believe is lighter, stronger and safer than steel. The combination of new joining processes and precision robotics delivers tolerances those working in steel can only dream about. And consider this: The previous generation ASF was 75% constructed by hand. By comparison, the 2004 A8 L's build process is now 75% automated. A remarkable progression paying dividends in both quality and efficiency. The number of ASF parts has also been significantly reduced resulting in a 60% increase in frame rigidity compared to its predecessor. Ride comfort, all-around road behavior and handling-at-speed all benefit as a result. Demonstrating yet again, that less can sometimes be decidedly more.

Adaptive Air Suspension

Adaptive air suspension is an electronically controlled air suspension system at all four wheels combined with an electronically controlled, adaptive damping system. It unites sporty handling and a high level of ride comfort. In addition, the air suspension allows the speed-dependent lowering of the body, or ride height. This change in ride height lowers the center of gravity and significantly increases directional stability as a result. The vehicle's aerodynamics are improved at the same time.
