CooperationThe success of AUDI AG in motorsport is no coincidence. The company’s technical expertise is a guarantee for this – however, cooperation with the best external technical partners is also important. | |
Shell, Bosch, Michelin & CoMost of the partners involved in the R10 TDI project have already been working successfully with Audi Sport for many years – and with several since the start of the “original quattro” project at the beginning of the 1980s.
As was the case during the successful R8 project, with its innovative FSI Technology, Shell as Audi Sport partner gave advice and support. The Audi R10 TDI also benefits from Shell know-how: As official fuel supplier to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Shell has developed an extremely high-performance Diesel fuel, which is optimized for use in endurance races: “Shell V Power Diesel LM24”. In this case it is a Diesel fuel with GTL, which is available in a similar form as “Shell V Power Diesel” at over 5,000 Shell Stations throughout Europe.
Michelin was an exclusive and reliable tire partner during the R8 years. The R10 TDI project is also a new challenge for the current Formula 1 World Champions: A larger front tire was designed specifically for Audi. The enormous torque of more than 1100 Newton meters produced by the TDI engine makes great demands on the rear tires, which only one tire partner with a technical background and resources like Michelin could deal with.
As with the direct injection TFSI used in the successful Audi R8, the cooperation between Audi Sport and Bosch was carried over to the R10 TDI project. The latest generation Common Rail Injection System was developed together. The Bosch Motronic MS14 assumes control of the engine management.
As one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality components for the motor-vehicle and engine industries, MAHLE has been a trusted partner of Audi Sport for many years. MAHLE supplies the pistons and other components for the revolutionary V12 TDI power unit fitted to the Audi R10 TDI.
Garret has been on board since Audi started competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As with the Audi R8, twin Garrett turbochargers are also at work in the new Audi R10 TDI. Garrett is a product from Honeywell Turbo Technologies, which belongs to the global operating technology concern Honeywell International.
Dow Automotive equips the Audi R10 TDI with its innovative Diesel Particle Filter System. The internationally operating concern with a worldwide network of development centers supplies the automobile industry with plastics, adhesives, sealing materials and plastic reinforced products.
Numerous other trusted technical partners have cooperated on the R10 TDI project. The wheels originate – as with the R8 – from O.Z. Racing. The new refuelling system, which allows an almost splash-free fast refilling procedure, was completely redeveloped together with the company Stäubli. Oakley supply special night-vision protective goggles, which ease the mechanics work during pit-stops. The drivers’ and mechanics fire-proof overalls are supplied by Sparco and Sandtler. As is the case with all Audi Sport projects, PTC is a reliable partner with its software solutions.
